Wheaton Academy Costa Rica 2018 Surf, Science & SERVICE
This past January, WB Surf Camp was honored to lead a very special group of young ladies from Wheaton Academy on the trip of a lifetime. It was a trip full of smiles, laughter, learning and lots of STOKE! Our travels took us to the beautiful country of Costa Rica. We went to paradise and came back better people. Our mission while there was clear: we were to embark on a journey of SURF, SCIENCE & SERVICE!
The group of 16 young women, who made the trek, attend Wheaton Academy in Chicago, an elite school that produces some of the country’s best young minds. Their intelligence, eagerness and overall zest for adventure didn’t disappoint and was the heart of the program.
About Our Trip
The trip started out with our awesome instructors spending three days in Chicago teaching marine science at Wheaton Academy. In addition to these lessons, the team got to participate in a hands-on shark dissection! The science portion of the trip was only the beginning! After leaving the cold weather of Chicago, we headed for the beautiful, warm beach town of Playa Grande, Costa Rica. Here the girls conquered the surf portion of their voyage. All participants rode beautiful waves and got to experience the powerful energy of the ocean.
The trip was also a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn about the region’s customs and, as well, serve the local Costa Rican community by performing an awesome service project. We were lucky enough to help a local food bank who provides meals and rations to families in need.
The girls were a group of angels. They helped fill over 120 bags of non perishables and deliver them to families that desperately needed them. It was truly a magical endeavor that left all of us feeling blessed to have been a part of it. To live in service of your fellow man is a mantra we should all hope to live by. WB Surf camp is LUCKY. Lucky to have the opportunity to lead life-changing trips like this and we only hope that we can share our experiences with you.
