Zac Carnevale
Guppy Camp Counsler
Zac grew up in Northern New Jersey, where there are many more snow-covered slopes than surfable waves. As a result, Zac’s love of extreme sports began with snowboarding. From age ten on, Zac took every opportunity to get on his board to practice—he even tried “stair snowboarding” and “wet grass boarding” (neither of which made much of a splash in the world of extreme sports.) Every year he looked forward to the first snowfall, when he would ask his dad to bring him to the mountains. He continued to improve, snowboarding for seven continuous years, until his family moved to Wilmington, NC. It was here, at age 17, that Zac first learned to surf on his brother’s board (an idea that his brother wasn’t too fond of!) He learned quickly, adapting his other board skills to surfing. At first, he said, it was difficult. The balance was there but all the techniques specific to surfing were not. He went out every day he could and eventually developed strong surfing skills. He currently rides a 7S Fish, and would love to travel on a surf trip someday. With almost two years under his belt in the water, he not only has learned to respect the sport, but he has learned to respect the ocean, its powers, and all of the creatures that co-exist with us in a coastal environment.
Zac is a student at The University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He is majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in Pre-Med in hopes of one day going to Med School, perhaps at Chapel Hill. His ultimate career goal is to become a Pediatric Ophthalmologist. Zac was born with a condition called PHPV, and has lived all his life without sight in his left eye. This has led Zac to strive for the thrill of being able to help children in ways that weren’t thought of when he was younger. He someday wants to develop a cure for his condition and also perfect the human eye transplant.
Other than surfing, Zac likes to hang out with his friends and play the piano, creating new songs with his younger brother. He enjoys taking day trips to Myrtle Beach to see bands, and he is willing to make longer trips to see his favorite artist, Bruce Springsteen.
