Surf Camp Team
Taryn Bain
Certified Surf Instructor
Taryn is living a lifestyle she couldn’t have imagined when she was a child battling ice storms in Michigan: During the school year she teaches upper level Spanish classes at the premier local high school and takes student groups to Latin America. During the summer she introduces both locals and tourists to surfing and to ocean conservation through her work with Surf Camp.
Taryn grew up learning to enjoy both water sports and the serenity that comes with appreciating nature. After receiving her degree in Secondary Education, English and Spanish from Western Michigan University, Taryn taught for two years in Battle Creek, Michigan, before deciding that she would move to Wilmington to pursue her dream of living in an ocean community.
Upon arriving in North Carolina, Taryn started to meet local surfers; she was hooked after catching her first wave. Soon she purchased her cherished Gordon & Smith long board, and paddles out whenever she finds time. She has been thrilled to surf the shores of the Carolinas, Costa Rica, and the Galápagos Islands.
When she isn’t surfing, Taryn spends time with her husband James, plays on beach volleyball and softball leagues, organizes the Spiri and Ulitmate Frisbee Clubs at her school, and sneaks off for hikes with her Dalmatian, Oliver.
