Michelle Johnston
Travel Camp Director/Certified Surf Instructor

Ever since age four, Michelle knew she wanted to be a marine biologist when she grew up, and she has yet to lose sight of her dream. After high school, she enrolled right away at UNCW, attracted by its well-respected marine biology program and state of the art marine research center. She quickly became an honors student and a crew leader at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital and Rehabilitation Center. Michelle is continuing her studies as a graduate student in the environmental Health Sciences department at the University of South Carolina.

Michelle has vast experience applying her knowledge of marine biology outside the classroom. She has rehabbed sick and injured sea turtles for the past five years, and helped run a sea turtle nesting project in South Carolina. Because of her honors status, she had the opportunity to work in UNCW’s marine ornamental culture lab, where she cared for “Nemos”. She has also interned at Walk Disney World, and as part of her graduate studies, she worked with alligators and investigated water quality issues with reference to enhancing our abilities to keep our beaches clean.
