Matt has been surfing for three years. Fellow instructor Jen Young put him on his first surfboard, and he’s been hooked ever since. He rides a 7’6’’ board and enjoys catching waves all over Wrightsville Beach and Masonboro Island. Matt enjoys the connection with nature and fun with friends that surfing has brought into his life.

Matt grew up in Michigan, where he enjoyed all that the Great Lakes have to offer. Camping, fishing, swimming, skiing, and enjoying the beaches of Lake Michigan filled many of his summer days. While attending Western Michigan University, Matt was active on the Cheerleading Team and in a fraternity. After receiving his degree, he began teaching high school math and coaching. He continued teaching while working on his Masters degree in Educational Leadership.

After having grown tired of the arctic winters of Michigan, Matt heard the warm beaches of Wilmington, NC calling his name. He currently teaches math at Hoggard High School and coaches the varsity cheerleaders. In his free time, Matt enjoys running, volleyball, working out, surfing, and traveling. Some of Matt’s favorite trips have been to Australia, New Zealand, Guatemala, Spain and France.

A great sense of humor is what Matt looks for in the people he surrounds himself with. He enjoys combining his love of sports, education, and fun to help young people learn new athletic skills.
