Justin Pittinaro
Certified Surf Instructor/Team Trainer
Justin has been hooked on boardsports since the third grade. It
all started with his dog’s eagerness to pull him around the block everyday
after school on an old plastic banana skateboard. He got his first real
skateboard in the sixth grade and bought a surf board (without a fin) at a
garage sale in the 8th grade for 5 bucks. Since then, board sports have
consumed his life. His passion for surfing and the natural environment
which surrounds it sent him to UNCW where he earned his bachelors in
Environmental Sciences in 1994 with a lot of peripheral credits in
philosophy.
Upon graduation he moved back to his home town to work for the
oldest privately owned and operated shellfish hatchery in the world and
continued to session his hometown ramps and waves until, on a whim, he spent
a winter in Vermont surfing the frozen wave. One winter turned into 10 and
he now has a home in Stowe, VT where he spends his winters teaching
snowboarding to novice and advanced riders, coaching USASA circuit riders,
and as a member of the Education Staff for the American Association of
Snowboarding Instructors (AASI) helping to train the east coast in the
national standards of snowboard instruction. All that time Justin continued
to chase surf whenever a swell hit.
Pitt, as his friends know him, has sessioned ramps, swell, and mountains all
over North America, Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean. He has been
featured in local newspapers, and last winter season had a weekly spot giving the snowboard
tip of the week on RSN’s “Must Ski TV”. Father of two young children and
dedicated husband, Pitt gets his highest high from what he calls OPF, Other
People’s Fun. In one way or another, throughout his whole life Pitt has
been dedicated to the ideal that a person should leave the world a better
place than it was before he/she arrived, and has made a career and life out
of showing people a good time. For Pitt, life has been a long series of
epic sessions with good friends and family
He currently is eagerly anticipating the return of winter by hiking,
splitting wood, and converting his F-350 to run on vegetable oil. Soon enough, this Spring Pitt will once again return to the warm waters of Wrightsville Beach as one of our lead surf instructor trainers and camp directors.
