Certified Surf Instructor
Annamaria enjoys mountain biking, surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and soccer. Aside from exploring new sports and new terrain, her passions are biology and art.Growing up just north of New York City, Annamaria was not exposed to surfing much until high school, when she joined her school surf team. After two years of learning and practicing she became the surf club president in her senior year. Teaching friends to surf became her favorite pastime; if she wasn’t surfing, she was talking about surfing. After awhile her friends had no choice but to try it.
After graduating from high school, Annamaria deferred entrance to college to spend a year living in Australia with her Aunt and Uncle. When she got there she joined the local Surf Life Saving Club for six months of training in water safety and swimming in order to volunteer to patrol the beaches during weekends and holidays. She learned a lot about ocean life and was exposed to other water sports like surf skiing and board paddling races. She also volunteered for the CVA (Conservation Volunteers of Australia) at several national parks. After learning to snorkel, she explored many of Australia’s native marine species.
This time in Australia helped fuel her love for the environment and has inspired her to continue her studies in biology and marine biology when she attends Stony Brook University in the fall as a student in their Women in Science and Engineering Program. Annamaria will serve as a Surf Instructor during the 2009 season.
