Hunter Hay
Assistant Director/ Certified Surf Instructor
Hunter grew up in Beaufort and Morehead City, North Carolina. His first memories of the beach are of being quizzed about marine life by his parents, who both worked in the marine sciences. He went on several family trips to the Florida Keys where he spent time exploring the reefs and furthering his love of the ocean. His early introduction to the scientific side of the coastal environment instilled a strong sense of responsibility in him for the natural world, and especially for the coast.
Hunter’s love of the outdoors was boosted when he began surfing at age 10. Shortly after learning to surf, he began competing, progressing through local contests to regional, eastern, and national contests at the amateur level. Later in life, Hunter started making travel surf trips which took him to Costa Rica, Mexico, Fiji, and on to Australia and New Zealand. It was in Australia while taking a course in Marine Ecology that he rekindled his interest in the outdoors and earth science. Once back in the United States, he transferred to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he studied Environmental Studies and Oceanography.
Hunter strongly believes in passing on his love for the oceans and coastal environment to future generations since they are the ones who will be facing the greatest challenges in protecting and preserving these areas. Hunter believes that most often, it is those individuals with a love of something that requires a healthy, natural environment, who work the hardest to protect it. He hopes that by passing on his love of surfing to others that he can also help pass on a love of the environment.
