Carolina Surf School Frequently Asked Questions

If I have never surfed before, is the Carolina Surf School for me?
About 95% of our students have never surfed before, let alone held a surfboard.  Our Carolina Surf School is tailored to beginners.  The only prerequisites are to be able to swim, and ready to have the time of your life!

Do you have a valid permit from the Town of Wrightsville Beach to operate on the Beach Front?
We do have a valid permit. This ensures that we have current liability insurance and workman's comp insurance. All of our instructors carry a copy of this permit at all times. It is the law in Wrightsville Beach!

Why should I select your surf school over any other?
Our reputation precedes us. Our founder has been teaching people how to surf professionally longer then anyone else in the area (over 18 years). Our team of instructors is second to none, we have a full time reservation staff that is available 7 days a week, and we use the highest quality equipment. You will also receive a payment receipt and a survey after your lesson. We want to continue improving our customer service, so every client's opinion is important to us! Last season we invested over 1,800 of training into our team so we are prepared and professional.

Definitely do your research and you will see. If you want a reference just ask as, we have many clients that would love to talk with you. You will not care how much we know and how our training prepares us until it is needed. That is when you will truly care about having chosen us! Our greatest compliments are our many returning clients and tons of word of mouth referrals. We also give back to our planet and less fortunate it's less fortunate people through our "Giving Back One Wave at a Time" initiative. When you support WB Surf Camp you support all the good things we do and all the lives we change for the better.

Who are our instructors/coaches?
All of our employees are professionals, are highly trained and dependable, and are here to help your surfing progression in an accommodating friendly manner. Profiles on all of our instructors can be viewed under the instructor link on our website.

Where do my lessons take place?
We offer Surf School lessons at all area beaches in Southeastern NC including, Wrightsville Beach, Surf City, Topsail Beach, Figure Eight Island, Masonboro Island, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Fort Fisher.
What time are lessons offered?
Privave lesson times are tide dependent, but we do try to cater to your schedule as much as possible.  Call for exact times if you have dates in mind. Public group lessons will be offered from 8:00-10:00 am and 4:00-6:00 pm.

What types of lessons do you offer?
We offer private lessons (one student to one instructor), semi-private lessons (two students to one instructor), private group lessons (three students to one instructor) and public group lessons (three students to one instructor).   These can all be two or three hour lessons.

Tell me more about your public group surf lessons?
Our public group 2 hour surf lessons take place from Memorial Day to Labor Day. You can join this learn to surf clinic by yourself and get our group rate. They take place at Wrightsville Beach Access #4. It is a great affordable way to try out the sport of surfing.  Adults can join us for multiple days and get 1 hour free surfboard rental to practice then 1.25 hours of surf instruction.

What age range are your students?
We have students of all ages!  We offer private lessons for ages 5 and up.  Semi-private and group lessons are available for ages 11 and up.

Do you provide all the equipment?
All equipment is provided.  The soft-top surfboards that we use are of the highest quality and are most conducive to safe learning and productive surfing.  We also provide each student with a 50 SPF rashguard to wear while surfing to prevent chafing and sunburn. Equipment does matter, the Surftech Soft tops surf boards we use are by far the highest quality on the market. The quality of boards we use makes a difference.

What do I need to bring?
Summer Camp QuestionsJust wear a bathing suit and sunscreen, and all you need to bring is a towel and water bottle!

What will the water temp be?
The water temperature in Southeastern NC during the summer months will hover around 80 degrees. These perfect temperatures mean wetsuits are not necessary. We will supply you with a rashguard (equivalent to 50 spf protection) to prevent sunburn and rashes.

What happens if conditions are unfavorable for surfing on a particular day?
To accommodate larger surf or stronger wind conditions, your surf instructors will tighten up the student to instructor ratio to 1:1 to maximize your safety and enjoyment.  Should weather or wave conditions cause us to cancel a lesson, we will make every effort to reschedule your lesson.  We average a 97% surfability factor during our summer season, so days are rarely missed. Your safety and enjoyment is our concern so we will reschedule your lesson if conditions are unsafe or unfavorable.

We are traveling to North Carolina from out of town.  Are there hotels, rental properties, or campsites nearby that you can recommend?
We maintain a list of recommended campsites, hotels, and real estate companies in the area.  Please call us at 866-844-SURF or e-mail us at  and we’ll be happy to send you a copy!

Should I tip my instructor?
Our team works hard to exceed your expectations and ensure that you have an unforgettable experience.  If at the end of your lesson you are pleased with the performance of your instructor, a gratuity is never expected but would be greatly appreciated.

What sort of payment do you accept?
We accept VISA/MC/AMEX credit cards or cash. Your credit card will not be run until the lessons is completed.
