General Questions
If I have never surfed before, is this program for me?
About 90% of our students have never surfed before let alone held a surfboard. Our program’s dynamic curriculum is tailored to beginners. The only prerequisite is that you do have to be ready to have the time of your life and be able to swim.
Is there a lifeguard at the beach you use, I am worried about some of the safety aspects of a surf camp?
All of our Surf Camp instructors hold current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification as well as CPR and First Aid. One might say that we over qualify our team with this many lifeguards, but it is better to be safe than sorry. We have an impeccable safety record and are very proud of it!
What are the ages are of your overnight campers? Am I too young/old to attend one of your programs?
Our programs are age specific. Because of our dynamic curriculum we group similar ages together. We also feel that an 11 year old should not be in the same program as an 17 year old. We do have a minimum age of 8 years old for any of our day camps. As for being too old, you are only as old as you feel.
What is the typical amount of time-spent surfing in your overnight programs?
We typically surf 2 sessions per day, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Our surf time depends on conditions and our student stamina. We have never once had a student complain about enough water time. We have had students ask for a day off though.
What kind of supervision is there?
We have 24 hours a day same gender supervision. At night there are several overnight counselors who live on campus with our students. All students must sign, and follow our camp guidelines, which are explicitly gone over during camp orientation. If any rules are broken or any disruptive behavior takes place students will be sent home at parental expense with no refund, no exceptions.
What airport is best to fly into for your Wrightsville Beach and Cape Hatteras Programs, and do you provide a shuttle service?
The best airport to fly into is Wilmington’s International Airport, which is located around 10 minutes from the University. Our Surf Camp instructors meet all participants at the baggage claim. The cost is included in program tuition.

I have some surf experience and want to work on more advanced maneuvers, can you coach at this level?
Yes we work with students on intermediate to advanced levels, and utilized digital video analysis in all of our programs. Our 3-1 student to instructor ratio allows for almost personalized surf coaching. We group more advanced surfers together and pair them with an instructor and they will surf a peak of their own. Intermediate to advanced teens surfer are encouraged to join us in Costa Rica as this program.
Do you offer Scholarships?
Yes, we offer scholarship to those in need. Please call our office for a financial aid application.

Do I need a PASSPORT/VISA?
A passport is required for all international trips including Costa Rica and the British Virgin Islands. Correct travel documentation is your responsibility.
Should I bring a friend?
More than 95% of our participants come by themselves for their first year. Many times, returning surfers will plan a return adventure with friends they made the previous year at camp. Participants quickly form long lasting friendships during their stay and return home with many new friends. We do not allow more than 3 teens in any one group who already know each other from the same home town.
Where do participants come from?
We have students that come from all over the US and the world including Canada, France, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Venezuela, and we even had a teenager fly in from India. We have also had students represent almost every state in America.
I am a finicky eater, can you cater to special diets?
Yes we can. We know how important it is to eat healthy meals when you are surfing all day long. As a matter of fact some campers say we have the best “eating” out of any camp they have ever been too.
Your program looks amazing can I come for multiple sessions?
For your first experience at Surf Camp you can only come for one week. This ensures an amazing week for all, including your instructors. Once you have attended, you are then allowed to come for as many weeks as you want with our camp directors approval. We have teens that have joined us in the past for over a month.
